Christmas 2013

We are coming to the close of another year!
This year I typed out a letter to include with our Christmas card.  It was sent to friends and family that aren't local.   Since my "to do list" this coming break includes the printing of this blog, I thought I'd include it here since it is a good recap of what the Lord is doing in our family right now.
I'll leave you with that letter.......

Dear Friends & Family from around the world!
This year I thought add to the usual Christmas card and include a bit of news from the Valks in Canada!
Overall we are enjoying our busy life, rich in many blessings from the Lord!
Eric has been blessed with a lot of work which include various construction/maintenance type jobs for a variety of people and companies, mostly church going folks.  He enjoys the variety, but because he is self-contracting himself he has the flexibility to make himself “not available” on days or weeks we are doing things as a family.  He has struggled at times with back issues (crushed disc) and earlier this year, his one knee causing pain.   Minor surgery in June fixed that up and we are thankful to the Lord for continued strength given for Eric to work hard in mostly physical work.   Eric is currently enjoying a year (at least) off from consistory work as well as the rest of the family are happy to have less meetings on the schedule.  We continue to make some money “on the side” by purchasing young cows in the spring (this year we had 10!), letting them graze our land over the warmer months and come October they are off to the family freezers of friends!    In the early summer we also fill our barn with small hay bales, which we then sell on during the winter months to horse farmers in the area.   It is all good physical labour to keep our small army “occupied.”
I (Christine) am thoroughly enjoying our homeschool year this year!  I do know that I am nearing the top of Mt. Everest in terms of the age spread of the children.  Two high school, three in the middle, and one new reader!  And don’t forget the not quite two year…but we’ll get to him later!  I enjoy the challenge of and variety for this brain of mine!  There is no doubt that I sleep well at night!   God continues to answer my prayers with the strength needed to accomplish all (or most, or some!) of what is needed to get done.  Mostly I can attest that He is near me at the times when things don’t go as planned and the “planned” turns into teachable and sanctifying moments for ALL concerned!
I am enjoying my continued work in the church library, with the added bonus of being able to preview many wonderful resources for faith and life!  My sister and I enjoy doing a bit freelance photography here and there as well.   We have done newborns, families and even a few weddings over the last 4 years or so.  It is a joy to get the creative juices flowing and bless families with precious memories in photos.
Our Jacob will be turning 16 next week (Nov 27).   He is intense, dedicated, logical, and creative and it is wonderful seeing him develop into a fine young man!  He has left the world of gecko breeding and is exploring different passions!  The musical instruments in his room include an acoustic guitar, electric guitar (with amp), and a jimbe (drum).    You will also find various pencil and pen sketches scattered around his room.  Eric and I both have one sister each, and each of them are very talented artists…it would seem that those “aunt” genes are coming through with Jacob.  Actually as I type I gave him a box of old frames and he is framing some of his sketches to display at a “teen art show” at the local library.  He might even sell a few!  Jacob has been working for about 1.5 years at the local library which he enjoys far more than “boring mind numbing” greenhouse work!  He filled his summer with work and volunteering as a leader at the local Bible children’s camp.  Jacob takes his school work very seriously, and while struggling some with physics, he excels at his written work.  He is doing a course where he will write a whole novel over the course of the year and he wanted to take a persuasive writing and speech course which is being marked by an outside company.   It is hilarious for me to think this is the same child that just about died when he was 6 and had to write a whole sentence!  All good!  He is unsure what he wants “to do” in the years to come, but we do know that the Lord has given him many talents and gifts.  We are seeking to trust Him, and that He will make it clear.  We are happy that we have an open relationship with Jacob as he often will express his musings over life and God’s ways; we are able to see the Lord working in His heart of which it is a delight to witness!
Our dear daughter Macayla is 14 years old.   She is quite the social bug and we are very grateful that the Lord has placed some lovely girls as dear friends in her life.  Macayla has an abundance of patience for her youngest brother, perhaps not quite as much for the bigger brothers though!   She is always happy to help in the kitchen and for many months  was happy to be the “baker” for her dad’s deacon meetings.  She has babysitting jobs here and there and has also done some greenhouse work in the spring.  I had Macayla home for a lot of this past summer, which we a huge blessing to me.  She did volunteer at the same Bible Camp as Jacob for 3 weeks and does a wonderful job at leading the singing and working with the children.   Macayla works steady at her schoolwork and although it doesn’t come easy to her, she is happy to re-work assignments as required.  She is also having written work corrected by others, which has been a blessing to get that critique and encouragement.    She loves to shop and is beyond thrilled when we can carve out time to get to the big mall!   God is also working in her heart as she is quick to serve others in our church community and her home.
Justin and Kadin will be the 13 years old in January!  Wow!   Despite VERY different personalities, they have MANY of the same interests which is why they can be included together.  They are both passionate about the cadet program at church, working hard to complete many badges.  They also love the snow derby where many of the local churches form teams within their club and compete against each other in the wonderful winter setting of SNOW (or if there isn’t enough- MUD!)!  Events include fire building, first aid, compass work, and overall teamwork.   Justin and Kadin love to quiz each other using the derby manual to gain maximum points for their team.   Their bedroom is a Lego wonderland!  For birthdays and saving money they have accumulated many different large sets, and will spend hours creating and recreating.  Justin and Kadin have both gained a “reputation” of two hard-working lads!  Unlike their oldest brother they thrive doing physical labour.  They are our number one “hay” workers. They have been hired here and there for various church people and although they are still young we can see them working in some sort of trade.  Justin and Kadin also work steady at their schoolwork and can quite often be found working in the morning before breakfast, to have more playtime later.  Kadin is our real tender heart.   At times, I could see him working in some sort of “care” job with seniors and other special people. Justin, although the “louder” twin is also ready to help others.  A man from our church conducts a “mini” church service at a local seniors’ home, and Justin and Kadin often go along to help.
Our delightful 9 year is Levi.  The first of our Canadian born children!   Levi follows close behind his twin brothers with his love for and collection of Lego.  I can count on at least 30 minutes of absolute silence with four brothers huddled on the couch each time the Lego magazine arrives at our house!  Levi is a very friendly boy and is often invited to different friend’s houses each Sunday.   Levi loves hay season as well, and easily climbs the full wagon to push bales down to those working below.  He has joined cadets this year as well and looks forward to it each week.  He works steady at his schoolwork and has a particular knack for geography (country names).
Gideon is one of our 5 out of 9 birthdays in January when he will turn six!  He is also in on the Lego fun, weapons, and other all other things “boy.”   He has a knack for the “random” comments or questions, and if you have read my blog at all you will find some of his hilarious conversations there.  He is our new reader in the house!  I have picked an entirely different curriculum to teach him with (a bored mom is not good for anyone!) and we are both thoroughly enjoying it!  He sits in with many of the other subjects and it is surprising what he picks up.
Malachi, our “baby,” will be TWO is January!  Where does the time fly?  He was a fast mover, crawling last fall and walking around his first birthday.  AND a climber!  I’m glad I had all the help around here to catch him conquering various “mountains.”  Each day is a delight to see what words he says and uses that we didn’t even know he knew!  One day he even took our Gideon’s reading book, flipped it open and started with “eeee,”  “t-t-t-t”,” aaaaaa”!  Maybe he’ll be reading by the time he’s three- that’d be nice and easy for me!  This (school) year he actually plays (instead of destroys!), and when Justin, Kadin, and Levi each have their allotted time each morning to play with it is easy to fill the time with Thomas trains, truck, and animals!

Now…if you would all imagine a reality TV show based on the perfect behaving overachieving children you might think we would be the top contenders!  Let me assure you that is NOT so!  We have days, many days, actually every day where sin is clearly shown, where attitudes need adjusting, where selfishness is shown (for all nine of us!) and where sometimes there is just WAY too much testosterone flowing around this place!  Sheesh!  Imagine the window in the pet store with puppies rolling around “playing,” only the “creatures” around here are A LOT bigger and louder!
As a family, every three weeks, we enjoy serving snacks and drinks to the local Spanish speaking migrant workers in the area.  It is a wonderful way to serve and for our children to see that there are Christians in the world that look and speak different from us!   Our four oldest are memorizing chapters from James and Romans, participating in Bible Quizzing. Add to that the “regular” meetings of church life, powerful preaching from our (new!) pastor each Sunday, young people’s, Sunday School, catechism, and our life is indeed full!  Such blessings!
All of our Canadian family here is also doing well.  All of my parents’ four children, with spouses and children live within the same region.  My parents have a total of 19 grandchildren to enjoy!  My mom did have major colon-rectal surgery in May of this year.  There was a concern of cancer, but we are ever thankful to the Lord that she was given the “all clear.”  She had one other scheduled surgery related to her case, and possibly one more in the future, but she is healthy and strong and most of all resting in the Lord’s Sovereign plan.  Over the last 7 years, 3 out of 4 of my grandparents passed away.  We fully realize how special and unique it was to enjoy them for as long as we did!
AND for the last year or so we have been setting aside our “hay and cow” money for the ultimate field trip!  Destination New Zealand and Australia!!!   There are many, many details yet to be determined and we will see where the Lord leads us and how it all works out!
MOST OF ALL we see the Lord’s working in our hearts drawing us closer to the cross!  As we live this full life in the midst of the struggles of sin in our lives, messy relationships around us, and the frailty of the body we can attest to an amazing Heavenly Father that is seeking to draw us away from the idols of our hearts and closer to HIM.
He is refining….and often using fire to do so!
Well…..I certainly did not intend for the letter to be so long!  Perhaps it is easy to see where Jacob gets his love of writing from!

We pray that you all also may attest to the Lord’s direction and nearness in your lives!
With kindest greetings and love,
Eric and Christine, Jacob, Macayla, Justin, Kadin, Levi, Gideon & Malachi

Book Review.

I know I mentioned a review on a marriage book.
That is yet to come.....in the meantime here's my review of another book I'm proof-reading for the church library.
It is called "Finally Free: Fighting For Purity with the Power of Grace" by Heath Lambert (2013)

It is endorsed by a long list of respected Bible teachers and counselors including Ed Welch.

It is a book meant to guide the reader from a life of struggle to a life of purity.   The author directs us through eight gospel-centered strategies for overcoming pornography.

Here is the blurb from the back of the book:

"Pornography is all around us.  It destroys marriage and leaves users with a warped view of sexuality.  Sadly, many Christians not only struggle to resist the lure of pornography; they are addicted, trapped by its power.
Breaking out of the deceitful web of pornography-as many know only too well-does not happen though merely trying harder to change or following particular method or program.  The only sure and effective motivation for change is the grace of Jesus.
In this book, experienced counselor Heath Lambert identifies eight strategies, each based on the work of Christ, that give people locked in the grip of pornography both the fuel and the road map for change.  Each chapter is grounded in the grace and clearly articulates how to apply the gospel in practical ways.
Whether you struggle yourself or are trying to help someone who struggles, there is good news: No matter how intense or long-standing the fight, Jesus Christ can, will and does set people free from the power of pornography."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The chapters include:
1. Grace as the Foundation in the Fight against Pornography.
2.  Using Sorrow to Fight Pornography.
3. Using Accountability to Fight Pornography.
4. Using Radical Measures to Fight Pornography.
5. Using Confession to Fight Pornography.
6.  Using Your Spouse (or Your Singleness) to Fight Pornography
7.  Using Humility to Fight Pornography
8.  Using Gratitude to Fight Pornography
9.  Using Dynamic Relationship with Jesus to Fight Pornography

Conclusion:  A Call to Holiness and Hope
Appendix:  Help for families and friends of Men struggling with Pornography
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I could spend much time quoting and quoting sections of the book that struck a cord in my heart.  Mostly because, while the topic is definitely directed towards helping those with this particular addiction of pornography, SO much can be applied to any sin struggle!

Chapter 2 was particularly helpful and (again) drawing the reader to the Power of the Cross while explaining the difference between worldly sorrow and Godly sorrow!

"Worldly sorrow wants to let bygones be bygones.  It preaches about leaving the past in the past and letting sleeping dogs lie.  When your tears result in your running away from people instead of toward them, your tears are worldly tears.  Worldly grief ignores God instead of leaning more fully in his forgiveness and grows comfortable with broken relationships.  Life-giving sorrow infuses you with zeal to restore every single relationship that has been broken.  Your sorrow leads you either deeper inside yourself or toward God and others."   pg.40

Tim Challies wrote a review on this books as well.  I enjoy reading his reviews, reading the book, AND then reading the review again!  In this case, why re-invent the wheel?  His review describes the book far better than my time or brain power will allow!

You can read it HERE.

Also David Murray gives a shorter review...HERE.

This book helped me see the depth of the sin in our hearts, how the devil uses this particular addiction to destroy......
BUT how BIG the God is that we serve!
He IS able to make new and bring true freedom!

Refreshing week-end away!

Eric and I were so blessed to enjoy 4 days away exploring Stratford, Ontario.
We stayed in a treasure of a motel owned by Christian folks which included bikes, walking trails, boats, swans and many other specials touches.
We stopped here and there along the way; malls, Ikea, an antique warehouse, Value village, and even bowling at 5pm at night before dinner (when does that happen!).
We were blessed to spend the Lord's day in Mitchell FRC, which included a lunch invitation to a lovely family of the congregation.
Of course we also caught a play at the Stratford festival- Romeo and Juliet! (Well done!)
We are ever grateful to my parents who moved in and made this possible!
We are thankful for our marriage and times such as this to re-focus on the Lord's callings in our lives and to strive to be "intentional" in all that we do to live "beyond ordinary."
(That's a title of a book I've recently read....a blog post for another day!)

Gideon Humour.

Today I took Gideon and Levi to the Niagara Safety Village.
This is a 2 hour education program for children on safety.  They meet for one hour with a fireman and talk about fire safety, including a simulated "smoke" bedroom and how to safely exit.
They also meet with a police officer and discuss various other age appropriate "safety."
Outside there is a mini town with roads, working traffic lights etc.  The smaller children drive those mini cars, and older children ride bikes....following the traffic rules.
Levi and Gideon were split up into the different levels.  I was a bit sad to miss Gideon driving the cars as I was asked to go with Levi's group.  In hindsight, that was probably good.
Through quite the laughter, I was informed later of the following conversation by some fellow moms.....

Policeman:  When might be a good time that you need to call 911?

Other little kid:  When a bad guy comes and ties you up!

Gideon:  Naw, I could get out of a bad guy tying me up because my brother ties me up all of the time and I can get out.

Policeman (looking slightly concerned):  Do your parents know?

Gideon (totally unfazed):  Naw.

Later when Levi's group was finished early since his group was a lot smaller, the (same) policeman mentioned how Levi's group wasn't as talkative.
I asked him if the other group asked more question etc.  (At this point I already knew about Gideon's sharing of family "secrets")
He started laughing and proceeded to tell me about this boy that talked about brothers tying him up, and that he had like 9 kids in his family or something!

"Yeah....that's my son!"

HA!  HA!

Levi

Tomorrow this fun loving boy will be NINE!
He is such a joy to our family!
I am thankful to God for Levi Jordan.

Speaking of Jordan.  Today (the day before his birthday) he is spending the day in Jordan (the town).  They have an original schoolhouse where children can participate in a program and act as if they are in class during the year 1908.

Levi from 1908.
(Please excuse the flipflops!)

The whole class.

Levi with a couple of his friends.

The school mistress explaining the day ahead.
She said that in 1908 they all would have been awake since 4:00 or 4:30am!

The students are ready to start their day.  Here is the boy line-up.

The close of summer.......

We have returned from a week up North with the family at Birchbank Cottages (in Restoule, Ontario).
We enjoyed a cool, but sunny week.
We delighted in time spent with friends...and the special family members (guests)for the week....Opa and Oma!
My parents set up their camper and spent the week enjoying cottage life.  It was lovely to have them.
We had quite the treat staying in a brand new cottage, thoughtfully equipped for families!
There were campfires, games, bacon and eggs for breakfast (3 times!), skiing (yes- I went once as well!), tubing, trips to the local pottery/craft store, fishing, and much more!
Now we are looking ahead to the beginning of a school year......
I am ever so grateful to serve a God that gives us all we need to accomplish our duties.  I look forward to see what the Lord has in store for our family this year.

(And what about THAT photo??  Jacob caught this beautiful sunset photo one evening at the cottage.  Wow.)

On God's Help.....and Community.

Every week I get Paul Tripp's Wednesday devotional/meditation.

I really appreciated this week's......

Here is the beginning.....

It's hard to admit your need for help. It's hard to admit that there are things you don’t know and don’t understand. It's hard to admit that there are things that you can’t do. It's hard to reach out and cry out for help.
It's hard to confess to weakness and ignorance. It's hard to have to depend on another for what you think you should be able to supply for yourself. It's hard to talk about what you don’t know and what you can’t do. It's hard to admit to poor judgment and wrong responses. It's hard to receive correction and to confess to sin.

Click HERE to read the rest of the article and more about the lies of autonomy and self-sufficiency, and the need of community.

Link and "I won!"

I have linked a blog by Tim Challies here a number of times.  Each Friday he does "Free Stuff Fridays" where you simply enter you name and email to be randomly picked for a give away of usually a number of books.
Contrary to my usual tread I've actually won - TWICE!
The latest set of books from CCEF.  And although I already own most of the books I'm thrilled to have second copies to give away!

I read a nice article on parenting this morning.
You can read it HERE.

I particularly can relate to the part of friendships.  Those that I am closest to ARE the ones that I feel free to talk about the struggles in our home.   The ones where we intuitively realize that having a child toilet trained at 18 months in not the great mark of motherhood.  Or when we see each other's child(ren) have a particular "sin" struggle we can encourage each and even share our own ways to overcome.
And mostly we pray for each other (realizing our need for God more and more), even in the times when we don't know specifics of a trial, but have been invited in each other's lives with the "snip-its" here and there.
I am so ever thankful that I have fellow moms, friends and family like this.
You know who you are!
Thank-you!

The Shocking Youth Message (Paul Washer)

Take the hour.
Set up the laptop while you are cooking (that's what I did!).
Or while you are doing some other job.
THEN send it to the young people in your house or other areas of life.

Random Ramblings.

Whew!
It is HOT around here.
Our AC is not working properly at the moment.  Everytime I think I'm just going to melt I go outside for 5 minutes and realize it isn't that bad inside.  It is all about perspective.

Our van died.
It needs a new transmission.
We decided to fix it, also on the advice of our mechanic, and then we'll look to upgrade when we find something.  Apparently Amish folk around are often looking for vans like ours, so we might be able to get a reasonable price for it.

Eric is busy getting in the hay.  Finding that window of 3 or 4 days to cut and let it dry is always the tricky part.  We're getting there.
I'm in charge of feeding the masses.

My sister and I had a couple of extended family photo sessions last month.
This matriarch went out and purchased coordinating shirts for her family.  Each family unit is a different colour.  I think it turned out wonderful!  Bright and cheerful!

We have a wedding to do in August. Fun!

My brother and his family moved to Jordan, about 6 or 7 minutes down the road from us!
We are very excited to have them close to us!

Jacob and Macayla are leaders at Agape Valley Bible Camp, and Justin, Kadin and Levi are campers this week.  Good times.

Well.  It is time to get Malachi up from his nap.

If there are many spelling/grammar errors in this post, it is from the melting brain syndrome.

Off to the pool.....

Repentance and Forgiveness.

Let me begin with the following two articles and an urgency to take the time to read them:

Go to this CCEF article (by clicking this sentence).
This is a long one, so you might want to print it, and sit down with a cuppa!  And keep it safe to re-read often.
This one is also great from Tim Challies (very practical).

I have also recently read the CCEF booklet (available in many of our churches, often for free) called "Forgiving Others: Joining Wisdom and Love" by Timothy Lane

There are a number of thoughts that I've come away with in these readings (in random order):

*  All three speak to the fact that apologizing and asking for forgiveness are NOT the same thing.

Here is a quote from Tim Lane:

"How we ask for forgiveness is critical.  If I accidentally spill a cup of hot coffee on you, I have not sinned again, so I do not need to ask for forgiveness.  But I should apologize for what I have done.  On the other hand, if I throw a cup of coffee in you face, I have sinned against you.  I must ask you to forgive me.  Is an apology the same as asking for forgiveness?  No.
You must first name the specific sin, and then explicitly ask the person for forgiveness:  'I was wrong to yell at you.  Will you forgive me?'  If I say, 'I am sorry for yelling at you,' and stop there, the typical response from the offended person is, 'Oh, that's okay.' What has happened?  First, the offender has not admitted his sin. And second, the offended person has lied by minimizing the sin!  It is not okay for someone to sin against another person! This false "forgiveness" is unbiblical.  And it can be very destructive to relationships over time."

John MacArthur's book on this topic answers it like this:

Q.  "What is the difference between true repentance and a mere apology?"
A.  "Genuine repentance always involves a confession of wrongdoing and a willingness to make things right.  An apology often takes the form of an excuse.
The word apology comes from the Greek apologia, which literally means 'a speech in defence of.'  Apologies are often nothing more than self-defence:  "I'm sorry if you took offence, but …"
Genuine repentance is properly expressed in an admission of wrongdoing and a plea for forgiveness:  "It was unthoughtful of me to say that.  Will you forgive me?"
Be wary of using merely apologetic language in place of genuine repentance."

*Since true repentance frees the offender of guilt and the burden of sin, plus true forgiveness frees the offended of bitterness and thoughts of revenge....THIS ultimately leads to TRUE reconciliation.

This ties in with the differences between mere apologizes (especially when they include "but...." or "I still don't agree.....").   This can apply to all relationships in order to sincerely move forward (instead of "peace faking"- see HERE for more resources)and possibly even deepen the relationship more then it even was before.   This is ultimately about "having relationships" the way that God wants, regardless of upbringing or past ways of communicating.

*I can improve greatly on teaching and practising these ideas in my home in my parenting.

When I think specifically about helping resolve conflict between my children, it is so easy to accept the muttered "I'm sorry." and then they move on possibly with a hug (like a board) or the roll of an eye.   I think if the truth of stating the particular offence to a sibling, asking for forgiveness (as a question), and in turn expecting forgiveness to be given would perhaps be artificial at first.   However the concept in the long run I believe would only help them for their future as adults when the "messiness" of life is bigger than "he took my toy."

THIS POINT IS NOT RANDOM AND I BELIEVE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT......

*Only the working of the Holy Spirit can cause and enable a person to be heartfelt in repentance, and another to grant sincere forgiveness.

We need to remind ourselves (often) who is King and who is in control.   This is hard to do.  So very hard as it is easier to "listen" to ourselves and either make excuses for our sins or become bitter towards others.   This should bring us to our knees!

I could say much as these resources (articles) are so rich in truths, truths that expound on what God says in His Word.

Please read them.

To Him be the Glory!

"Stuff" I've been reading lately......(and links for you!)

The school work is nearly finished.   Justin and Kadin are studying for their last test in science.   Macayla is working on her last big essay to send in.  And Jacob is done to two courses as well.  Levi, Justin, Kadin (and Gideon) are doing a unit on Africa together.   I really like Donna Ward's materials.   Mostly all great Canadian stuff....except for this one on Africa!

SOooooOOoOoo.....
I've had a bit more time to read!  Yeah!

I read Tim Challies' book review on this book.
I purchased the book for the church library last year, but didn't read it and simply added it to the shelf.   I promptly checked it out for myself and finished it a couple of weeks ago.  You can read Tim's review here.
The authors claim to have a fresh approach, and I totally agree!  I have read many books on this topic over the years.  My biggest regret being that I read them all AFTER I was married, and looking back I would have appreciated a more formulated view on this matter at the time when it was applicable to my life.   BUT....this is all still VERY applicable, since we now have been blessed with children and are looking ahead and having discussion about this matter with them!   Tim Challies' review says it far better then I could.....but I overall I consider this a must read, and have purchased a copy for my own shelf.

Here is a NEW book that I have yet to read but it getting wonderful reviews.  It is currently sitting in an online shopping cart of mine at amazon.   I look forward to reading that as well.   In the meantime I DID read a great review at this link.

The blog of Dr. David Murray is a regular on my list to read.  I truly appreciate his humble and Godly view on many issues.  I have read his small book on depression, which is excellent.  He seems to have a "soft spot" for dealing with mental illnesses.
I recently re-read (more carefully) this article.....please take the time to do so as well.  It is so helpful.
http://headhearthand.org/blog/2013/04/16/maximizing-and-minimizing-mental-illness/

This book (on the right) I am currently about half way through.

Here is the back of the book:
Stop.  Dare to ask the question:  What's going wrong in this relationship?  Maybe it doesn't seem to be "abuse."  No bruises, no sexual violation. Even smiles on the surface.  Nonetheless, before your eyes, a person is being destroyed emotionally.  Perhaps that person in someone you want to help. Perhaps it's you.  Author and counselor Leslie Vernick has witnessed the devastating effects of emotional abuse in families and relationships.  She knows it must be talked about if healing and hope are to be found.  Step by step, Leslie shows you how to.....
*recognize behaviours that are meant to control, punish, and hurt
*confront and speak truth when the timing is right
*determine when to keep trying and when to shift your approach
*get safe and stay safe
*continue to be transformed by God as you build an identity in Christ

There are two aspects (so far) that I really appreciate.

First, the author explains that just as bankers need special training to spot counterfeit money by inspecting thousands of genuine bills....we also need to compare and contrast characteristics that describe healthy relationships.  She outlines three categories that can be applied to all relationships.

Commitment and Care:
In all healthy relationships, personal or professional, the well-being of the other person is important to us even when we're mad, tired or busy.  At its most basic level, commitment promises that the other person's feelings, desires, needs, wants and thoughts will matter to us and that when the person considers something urgent or important, we give it our attention.  This doesn't always mean we have to do what the person wants.  We don't even necessarily have to feel the same way about an issue, BUT at least we give it proper thought.....Genuine caring values the other person's happiness, well-being, and goodness.  Selfish love is only interested in what the other person has to contribute to the relationship.

Honesty and Integrity:
Personal honesty (not lying to yourself) and interpersonal honesty (as appropriate for the level of intimacy in the relationship) are crucial for trust to flourish....As I said earlier, pretending, denying, hiding, evading, shading, or twisting facts or your feelings to create a particular impression are forms of lying and will lead to mistrust.  Like acid on metal, deceit erodes the foundations necessary to support a healthy relationship.  Honesty isn't the same as blurting out everything we feel at the moment of its greatest intensity- that can be very destructive.  Healthy individuals know it's wise to contain their toxic emotions until they have some time to think though their feelings and pray about how to approach the problem constructively.  People who exercise restraint can be more certain that their actions will lead to healing and restoration rather than mere relief or descending spiral of anger.

Mutual respect:
All people, no matter how much we might dislike them or disagree with their beliefs or behaviours, contain within them the precious image of God.  Christian's should never mock, disdain, or disrespect an individual (Prov. 14:21) even if they disapprove of the person's actions.

The author's goes on to explain more about Jesus being the perfect model of these kinds of interactions.   Overall I appreciate her angle of challenging us to look at how any relationship should look like.  To give others the benefit of the doubt (as fellow image bearers), and to seek to build the foundations of the above qualities with those around us.

The second aspect I would highlight is the author's focus on the heart of the issue.   She outlines different themes of the heart such as pride, anger, envy, selfishness, laziness, evil and fear.   She describes this simple illustration.  "I reached over to my shelf and grabbed a glass jar filled with water.  A small amount of sediment they could not see had settled to the bottom,  I vigorously shook the jar, and the water began to turn a muddy brown.  I asked, 'Did shaking the jar make the water dirty?'  (I love easy questions.)  Obviously the answer was no.  Shaking the jar didn't dirty the water.  Shaking the jar exposed the dirt that had settled along the bottom."     Luke 6:45-46 says it best.  (Look it up) Vernick says "Our heart's desires stimulate us as well as motivate us toward action, whether godly or sinful."    The author does not mix words about getting to the heart of the destructive behaviours that can create destructive relationships.

I could go on and on with different quotes....and if you're still with me (reading this post) then as they say in New Zealand "Good on-ya mate!"  We can all (including myself) be challenged to examine our hearts and how we deal with others around us.

I would also encourage you to check out this author's website.
Under "free resources" there are much to read and be helped by.

There is much to ponder here.

Writing is helpful for me...and I hope to one day put my blog to print. Both to document our family's happenings, but also to look back and see the places where God has uses others (and books) to help grow us and direct us more to Him.

To Him be the Glory!

Happy Birthday Macayla!

Today Macayla is 14 years old!

It was quite the arrival as I think back....Eric was on a 3 day business trip and I was still 11 days away from my due date.   We talked on the phone on the last night as he was due home that next day.  I assured him that all seemed well and that it looked like we "made it."   Wrong.  A few short hours later, I woke in the middle of the night as my waters broke.   I called Eric who set about a somewhat frantic search for a flight from the South Island to the North.  I called one friend to stay with 18 month old Jacob and another friend to go to the hospital with me.
Macayla was born about 7:35am and Eric was able to be there for the last 45 minutes.
What a thrill to welcome a beautiful daughter!
God has given her many talents and gifts, and we look forward to seeing how HE will use her to work in His kingdom!
(We got Macayla tickets to a Keith and Kristyn Getty concert.....we have to wait until the fall for it, but I'm sure it will worth it!)

We love you Macayla!

Mother & Daughter "Tea Time"

Macayla's Kingdom Seeker's group (at church) hosted an evening for the girls and their moms.   We had to dress "Victorian."  With the "carrot" of a prize for the best dressed, we decided to go all out and rented some costumes!
Such fun for the only girl of the family!

Excuse the blurry photo on the left.  That's what happens when a giggling brother is behind the camera!

I know.....I'm probably a couple hundred years early and belong in the medieval times!   One can't be too picky when looking at dresses that are all supposed to fit 20 inch waists!

And we added the gloves for this one!

I think this is a beautiful photo of Macayla!

Oma's fan that we "stole" from her bathroom wall.  (Thanks mom!)

Some friends (and neighbours) enjoying the fun!

Now don't say you haven't had any photos from me lately!
(Oh! And Macayla DID win for the best dressed girl...she was thrilled!)
